88 km (55 miles) – Total so far: 299 km (186 miles)
Cohill’s is an Irish themed bar, looks great from outside and in, but didn’t deliver on the beer (it advertised local beers but they were not on) and was rather overpriced for food. Red Sox won though on TV and look strong, important to keep an eye on the nearest team. A leisurely and decent breakfast though at 7, then a few jobs on the bike made for a bit of a slow start at 9. People do things so refreshingly early. No one was left in the hotel after 8. People will lunch between 11:30 and 12, and have dinner before 7 and be in bed at 9:30. Over the bridge into Canada and onto Campobello Island after customs. This is a great way to cross the border if on a bike, and thanks for the recommendations from XXX. The most noticeable thing to me was the houses, obviously reflecting different economies. On the States side every second building was for sale, and every second looked extremely run down. That certainly wasn’t the case in New Brunswick on Campobello Island. It’s only a few kilometres to Welshpool and the 30 minute 3 dollar ferry to Deer Island. This was the best riding so far; gentle hills, great scenery, ocean air on a day when the mist kept rolling in just as it seemed to clear. It’s an hour’s ride on Deer Island and then a free 20 minute ferry to the mainland. Wonderful houses are dotted around, and the same on the mainland. It’s about another hour to Route 1.
Joining Route 1 was a bit of a shock after such a quiet morning for traffic. Highway 175 from Pennifield so only 2 km on dual carriageway with 120 km/he speed limit. However I was looking for a break and came off at the first exit at Pennifield. I then spotted I could stay on highway 175 for a fair time. This was much better, and I recommend it to all future riders. It’s a quiet road, and fast. Soon it crosses back over Route 1 and follows the ocean, which with today’s mist was magnificent. I almost stopped at Pocologan, but the standing water around the camp area put me off, mosquitos. The restaurant looked great though. I went on, past a sign to “New River” and got to the village of Lepreau where there is a gas station with a shop. I canvassed opinion and ended up heading back 5 kilometres to New River. Hugely recommended to others passing through. There is a campsite, but at 25 dollars a night there is no reason to use it. The beach has outdoor showers and changing areas, picnic tables, and wild camping is permitted in New Brunswick. It is also has The Gull and Herring to eat at until 7 pm. No alcohol, but the owner has just called his wife to bring me some….
Distance 88 km, Max Speed 60.3 km / hr Ride time 4 hrs 50 min Average Speed 19.2 km / hr Departed at 9:00 am Arrived at 4:15 pm (5:15 pm NB time) Height climbed 880 metres

Early morning from Lubec

Cohill’s – good in theory, less so in practice

Another view of Lubec

Bridge to Canada

The little tug boat just pushes the ferry platform around

Day 1 puncture was snakebite, pressure too low.
Today a tiny stone, with very sharp edge, or possibly dark glass

Free ferry back to the mainland, the one to Deer Island was $3

The Gull and Herring – recommended stopover
