Roden to Sligachan, Skye

52 miles (84 km) – Total so far: 132 miles (212 km)

The road that winds it’s way around the south east coast of Harris is one of the greatest rides I can remember. Nicknamed the Golden Road it is a roller coaster type ride up and down, and plenty of dips and curves. Throughout there are amazing views of the sea, Skye in the distance, and little lochans dotted around the island. There is an option also to extend the ride, and take in the Minsh peninsula which means arrival directly into Tarbert. This was tremendous riding, and a real highlight of the trip.

Into Tarbert for lunch, and the 4 pm sailing to Uig, arriving in 90 minutes later. I had planned, rather speculatively, to ride the 28 miles to Sligachan that evening. The hotel there is an old favourite, and the campsite sat with one of the greatest views a site could have. The wind had not abated all day. But it had shifted around to become a north-westerly. A few degrees cooler, but it was in my favour. The 28 miles were nailed in an hour and a half, the the Cuillins brewery Pinnacle ale was certainly welcome.

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
