Day 38 – Amsterdam to Ijmuiden (ferry day)

20 miles (32 km) – Total so far: 2,253 miles (3,626 km)

A wet Amsterdam still has interests of course. Most significantly is that the fashion seems to be the yellow raincoat, as in that tremendously scary film, ‘Don’t Look Now’. It may be a bit dated now, but it is still very worrying, and the Amsterdam fashion currently seems in sympathy. The Dutch have good beer also, and thanks to a recommendation I visited De Beerkoening shop last night so enjoyed a few of them.

Cycling out of Amstersdam on a wet Monday morning was good fun also, at least until the city boundary. I was due at the ferry at 2 pm and made it in plenty of time, despite that westerly wind doing its best to delay me,

Distance 19.7 miles Time riding 1 hour 50 minutes

Amsterdam – in a wet summer

Der Beerkoening – tremendous selection

The road gets unexpectedly steep

The Amsterdam to Newcastle boat – not a cheap way to get back to the UK but at least no need to box the bike

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
