27 miles (43 km) – Total so far: 633 miles (1,019 km)

Breakfast at the Pension Umoljani. All local produce; jam, honey, eggs, cream cheese, homemade bread, and Bosnian-style coffee.
It was a great place to stay, family run and open all year, at weekends at least. The family live in Sarajevo during the week for the kids’ schools. Late lunch yesterday, a few beers, dinner of local cheese pie, a glass of local wine, bed and breakfast, at 30 euros.

And straight away a climb on a mountain track. This view looking down to the Pension, the building on the right.

Looking down to Umoljani.
Not so many miles in the last couple of days, but the riding has been fantastic.
Roughly, at least half the average speed on these tracks, and double the effort.
That’s why the most common question I get (What distance do you ride every day) is not really the most appropriate one.

This track is rougher than yesterday.
The steeper sections have small loose stones and are sandy, difficult to get traction, and it’s a push from time to time.
Cloudy and overcast, and some rain.

There’s an MTB track off to the top of the mountain, Bjelašnica, at 2047 metres. Too much with a loaded bike, for me anyway.

My high point for the day, at 1595 metres.

Meeting the paved road again, at the small town of Babin Do.
Several new hotels, and much building going on.
Tourists are gradually returning. I saw hardly any from Western Europe, but apparently there are a few.
It’s been almost 70 kilometres off-road, so,e amazing cycling.

20 fast kilometres on and its big city time…
Sarajevo, and even a bike path.
I’m calling it ‘end of part one’ as I’ll take a day here to attend to a few chores, and have a look around.
