Day 33 – Demazlice (Czech Republic) to Altendorf (Germany)

42 miles (68 km) – Total so far: 1,493 miles (2,403 km)

It was 7:30 pm when I got in last night, so a quick rinse off and a bite to eat.
We are only a 40 minute drive from Plzen so no surprise that that was the beer on offer. I had a couple, though it’s far from a favourite of mine,
A shorter day planned today, rain is forecast, hence the extra kilometrage yesterday.

I’m amazed by the amount of apple trees lining the roads. Most of the fruit it seems will be wasted.

There’s a climb of about 350 metres on a very quiet road, and it’s steep for a loaded bicycle, 10-15%.
Just after reaching the top the rain started, and at 750 metres up, it’s cold as well.

The border. The Bayern province of Germany, coming out of the mountains, but still very much South Bohemia.

Passing through the town of Rotz, the heavy rain has given way to gentler showers.

Soon I join the Schwarzachtal Radweg, following the Schwarz river valley.
It’s were the beer drinking game, ‘zoom, schwarz, profigliano’ originated.

Arriving into Altendorf, home for the night in a very pleasant gasthof.
The village has just celebrated its 900th anniversary.

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
