Day 36 – Getting home – summary and overall map

Thanks to Markus at Velorado bikes it was no problem to get a bike box.
Rather than drag / lift the box 500 metres to the underground I opted for a taxi to the airport, so that part was easy.
I managed to remember also that the luggage trolleys at Manchester need a pound coin, and exchanged one with the flight attendant.
A bus replacement service from Manchester to Preston, but being Sunday it only took an hour. Just necessary then to drag the box over a couple of platforms at the station, and I actually got home 90 minutes earlier than scheduled.

I had a rough budget of 50 euros a day, and stuck pretty well to that, averaging out at just a few cents less (not including the flights).

Overall my journey was 2,523 kilometres (1,568 miles) with 36,050 metres of climbing (118,275 feet). Some highlights…

The toughest day…
Day 5 – Janche to Kukes in Albania.
The SH31 is a challenging road, but spectacular. It is sealed, but has a very rough surface.
There’s more than 2,100 metres of climbing, going over two passes.

The best scenery and riding… at the Durmitor National Park in Montenegro, Day 9, my birthday by chance also.
This is an incredible place with breathtaking views.

….more from the same day, the incredible descent through many tunnels down the almost sheer cliff face to Pluzine.

This was also a wonderful day of riding, probably the second best of the course – but weather affected by low cloud and rain. Day 12 from Umoljani to Sarajevo. The first few hours on mountain tracks just below Bjelašnica mountain.

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
