Day 19 – Kolochava to Mizhhir’ya

Synevyr Pass – so good so climb it twice

33 miles (53 km) – Total so far: 907 miles (1,460 km)

Leaving the Agio Hotel this morning – good place to stay, the usual 400 Hrvynia’s, about £13 – and really couldn’t be faulted.

Up the Tereblya river valley this morning, from 510 metres asl overnight.

The sign is Kolochava, just leaving the town.

After the town of Synevyr the road climbs more steeply.

I’ve come to Synevyr pass on a smaller road, and actually have a small downhill to get to it.
There’s a couple of souvenir cabins – much busier than any pass I’ve been at, probably since the Transfagarasan

Synevyr Pass at 910 metres

Just off the pass and met Marc and Olenka from Ukraine, but a couple of weeks into a big Eastern European roadtrip with their 1 year old, and tiny caravan. Great to chat with them, and thanks for the card they presented me with.

I came down most of the way on the road, fast, and forgot that there was a track I really wanted to take, so with plenty of time left in the day I headed back up it – and it was certainly worth while.

Whereas it had been a busy road going back up, , I saw no one at all once beyond the farms on the track coming down.

Down to the biggest town I’ve been in for a while, Mizhhir’ya, with a population of 30,000.
I’ve a homestay 3 km out if town, and a good little restaurant near. The owner is the local English teacher, and sat next to me and talked my ears off while trying to eat.. in a nice way..

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
