Day 24 – Cisna to Tylawa:

The Trail Of The Eastern Front 1914-18

46 miles (74 km) – Total so far: 1,096 miles (1,764 km)

Leaving my accommodation this morning, at a very relaxed 9:15.
It was good, big and cool rooms, with a great sitting area and kitchen, it’s great being able to do your own breakfast.
The quick way back to the main road is along the narrow gauge railway for 50 metres. This is the first little tourist train of the day. The line runs for about 20 km.
There was a good little pop-up restaurant, near where we are, just out of town, that I was recommended to last night; zucchini pasta, excellent and a good price (around £3).

As with many days recently, starting the day riding up a river valley, this time to a mini-Pass at 720 metres, a 220 metre climb, but in the relative cool of the morning.

Another historically significant road.

All day on the 875 road, which is a bike trail, but despite that had moderate traffic. It’s the last weekend of the summer, the schools are back on Monday, and busy with tourists.

A day like I’ve rarely had on this tour, but so common on others: gently rolling hills with dairy farms, sheep and forests making a suitable backdrop.
On almost every day I’ve had a decent sized stony track section, without that today i was much faster.

I’m also riding on the Cross Border Cycle Trail, or Transgraniczna Trasa Rowerowa, and will be, on and off, for a few days.
The sign tells the history of the village, Czystogarb, of how it was originally populated by gypsies, horse ‘traders’ and breeders, until 1945 when there was a short and bloody battle between the Polish Army and Ukrainian Insurgents. Shortly after the population was displaced to the USSR.

These undulations mount up..there was 750 metres of climbing. The heat built quickly also, no storm clouds today, at lunch time it was 30C.

Into Tylawa and the Hotel Domenico, where I’d nabbed a late room for £12.
By now it’s 33C – so looks most welcome.
The usual ‘arrival routine’: launder riding gear, shower, check sport scores, rehydrate, charge GPS etc, blog.
Maybe a beer later, looks like some good choices.

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
