Day 30 – To Scrabster

The weather cleared this morning just about the same time as I took a right turn and headed out of the bog, along the Strath river. This is a superb road, and would be wonderful to cycle on. The river brings vegetation to the valley, and even trees. It seems almost out of place so far north.

I was heading for the Rosal Forest, which is the site of one of the larger clearance villages. There are over 70 ruined buildings here, in what I can imagine what as beautiful place to live. They were brutally cleared in the early 1800s; roofs taken off, several houses burnt, sheep, cattle, horses and dogs all shot.

By afternoon there were clear skies, and I headed long the north coast to Scrabster. Remembering this is the NC500 again, a few miles away I took a farm road heading down to the coast, and found a place to pull over for the night. The farmer passed soon after, and I had a quick chat and checked that it was okay.

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
