Day 32 – Part Two (Birsay)
Some additional photos (there’s a limit of ten to a page)

The Earl’s Palace in Birsay, built by the illegitimate son of James V in 1569. It was requisitioned by Cromwell’s troops in 1653, who when they saw the food in the kitchen, called it ‘mukk and filth’..

The Birsay coastline

A fisherman’s hut with a history. It dates back to Viking times, always used as inhabitation for fishermen. The latter photo show the old steps up the cliff.

Quick pick up of some beers I ordered last night in Kirkwall after sampling a couple of theirs. These premises are to house their new brewery and visitors centre but have been on hold with such little money coming in this last year. They have some really interesting brews, including an IPA / Barley Wine hybrid, and a really strong Porter.
