Day 32 – to Castril (part two)
Castril is recognised as a place of historic interest. The steep, narrow cobbled streets, with the typical whitewashed houses are a classic example of Andalusian village life. Of particular interest is the general structure and decoration of the houses, and the use of Arabic tiles and wood.
Emilio’s bar is pretty much the centre of the village, a steep walk up from the campsite, but well worth it. It looks out over the surrounding terraces and the ruined castle and the monument on the rock above. It was a great place to meet just a few other travellers and locals, and appreciate the well-priced beer and tapas (just 2 euros a half litre). Initially I showed a slight impatience at not seeing a waiter for ten minutes. An old guy was watching, and as I stood up to find service, he wouldn’t let me, and went himself. From then on he ensured the waiter’s presence as soon as my beer was low.
