Day 4 – to Snekkeled, Denmark
I had researched some hiking for this morning; deprived of any for two days travelling I was pretty desperate, and the dog even more so.
After filling up, taking advantage of the cheaper fuel, and a quick supermarket visit in Flensburg, we crossed the border and after half an hour arrived to the shore of the Baltic at Varnæs.
I say cheaper fuel, but on 1 August Denmark also is removing the duty from fuel, it will go from €2.25 per litre to €1.68 per litre.
There is a good hiking circuit here at Varnæs, taking in a variety of environments, beach forest, native bush, beach and sea views from 30 metres or so cliffs, all in a very pleasant 18-20 C with sun in and out.
After a bit of lunch I managed to get my first sauna in Scandinavia. I have been advised that for the nerve pain I get occasional in the legs, it will be very beneficial. This was in Kolding, and not too busy, as well as the bonus of the old person’s rate, which here they give to over 60s, 40 Danish Kroner, or about £4.50.
From there I headed onto the island of Funen, in particular to a farm a few kilometres north of Odense, which offers a very scenic park up for the night at 75 Danish Kroner. I’m aware I’m using three currencies here, somewhat long-winded.. but it’s about £9. I’ll stay a couple of nights here, it’s very quiet, and I’m the only person here. The fjord is a couple of hundred metres away, with a rocky beach that the dog is very much in favour of.
Driving long distances, by that I mean more than a couple of hours a day, is a thing of the past for a while. It had to be done really, yesterday 900 kilometres through the industrial towns of Northern Europe, not so appealing.
