Day 10 – the shores of Lake Vättern

Today was the second day of rain in succession. Speaking from a purely personal point of view, I was quite happy, as it keeps both the holiday makers and the biting flies away. It’s showery and windy, but still warm and humid.

In the morning the dog and I took on a circuit of the lake, something that the German couple who recommended me the place said could be done, despite the apparent lack of a linking path on the west side. Clearly they were having fun at my expense, though it was I who had the last laugh, as we succeeded in battering our way through the bush, trees and bog to compete the circuit.

After a leisurely lunch and some reading I drove 90 minutes or so to the shores of Lake Vättern, in particular to a small peninsula just north of Bocksjö village on the lake’s west side. It is the second largest lake in Sweden, after Vänern, and the sixth largest in Europe. I’d researched a good stopover place, down a rough track for a few kilometres, so no chance of any motorhomes. There were some campers and a German couple in a Caddy van, but no one else. It’s the best spot I’ve found so far, and the weather’s clearing to a bright evening with the waves of the huge expanse of water rolling in.

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
