All the rumour about the weather was for once correct. Im not sure about the winds today, but they sound strong, and westerly. The rain is supposed to pass through before the winds die down but it hasn’t yet (8 am). Fine weather after today. Although my Scottish Island Shakedown was great training for the wind, perhaps this is ‘so mighty as to lay low the mountains of the earth’. Riding isn’t good in these conditions.
I need to sort a few bits out, and will do some reading. About 2 am last night there was a black bear in the camp. I was woken by two tents yelling at it. Because of the rain lots of people had cooked by their tents, and eaten in them. Interestingly if the rangers find out they will have their permits revoked. So I me sure it will be an entertaining day.
There’s two other bikers here. Fred from Calgary is cycling to Bangkok. But in stages. First one to LA then a break, etc. the previous night his fly sheet got torn, so he put up a make shift tarp. I will try and get a photo, but I suspect it will not have lasted the night. It was extremely small and makeshift. I think he needs a new tent. He’s only on day 3 of a two year trip. Another guy from Brazil, but lives here on a carbon fibre road bike using here as a base and doing rides out. Really not sure why he is using here as a base, at $30 a day, when small towns around will be a quarter of the price and quiet. People are different though, and I have probably answered my own question.

Fred’s tent – this is just the soaking wet inner. His fly took off two nights ago, and the replacement tarp took off last night.
Many campers calling it quits today.

Avoid the Thirsty Bear Saloon
No beer served in glasses, just plastic. Too dangerous, the barman said. The only people in were two ageing bikers from Edmonton and myself.
