Day 19 Dubois to Lander

81 miles (130 km) – Total so far: 989 miles (1,592 km)

Manchester gathers itself for storms that will disrupt the 4th test, but for Wyoming it seems the worst weather has cleared,

Despite its 971 population Dubois is a lively place by night in season. It’s touch of the wild west goes well and isn’t overdone like back in Virginia City. The KOAs though I am tiring of. The first problem was when a couple of guys from a nearby caravan pitch wanted to light a fire in the tent area, despite having their own. It didn’t happen, but they felt they had the run of the site having been there for more than a month. I struggled to going enough to entertain me in a night. There was also a party on until 1:30 am. The site managers are asleep by 10:30 and clearly can’t hear it. Not good when keen for an early start.

A decent breakfast with some Australian motorcyclists and then away to some of the best riding this course, 39 miles steadily downhill through orange and red rock formations in the early sun. It was spectacular, and fast. After the junction to Riverton the road climbed onto the Wyoming plains and a southerly headwind made going much tougher. I now had 2 spokes out, so to make the Garrett Peak Sports Shop before 4pm was a real triumph. Problems sorted and into the free public park camping and shower in the elementary school pool. Lander looks after it’s bike visitors very well, as the guys in Garrett Peak Sports had said. Dinner slightly less good, but the Snake River IPA is still very present, and retired after the baseball match had finished in the park.

Distance 81 miles, Ride time 5 hrs 57 minutes, Average speed 13.7 mph, Max Speed 33.1 mph, Departed 9:40 am, arrived 3:55 pm Altitude 1720 metres

Dubois on a brighter morning

The first 30 miles leaving Dubois through the Wind River valley, spectacular scenery, some of the best riding yet

After the Riverton junction though, a climb to the windy Wyoming plains

Fort Washakie, part of Wind River Indian Reservation

In the town park at Lander there is free camping – baseball match on also

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
