Day 7 – Foroy to Offersoy

55 miles (88 km) – Total so far: 426 miles (686 km)

A day of three ferries – and was always going to be less mileage. There is an inevitable wait for the ferry, even though I had planned them. On the shorter routes they just tend to go to and fro, and don’t operate a timetable as such.

From Foroy camping you can see the ferry coming, so I hurried down a breakfast coffee and pedalled the 900 metres to the dock. From Agskardet it’s 35 kilometres to the next ferry at Jetvik, and quite a lot of up and down, including an uphill 3 kilometre tunnel at 6%, and a downhill short one of a kilometre. I only had to wait half an hour at Jetvik for the hour crossing across to Kilboghavn. This one at 65 NKR as opposed to 35 NKR for the shorter crossing earlier.

It’s 29 kilometres then to a dock, and that’s about all, at Stokkvagen. I had stopped at a fuel station 15 km earlier to check on this. The assistants said it didn’t run, but the manager used her office and got me the information. I had researched this and saw there was a boat on Friday afternoons only (otherwise 8:10 am each morning). The reason it was hard to locate is that it is a speed boat as they call it here. No cars, just a fast passenger transit. Stopping at Nesna, that got me to Sandnessjoen at just after 4 pm, having left at 3:05 pm. If you’re planning on taking this, it is an excellent service, but a bit more expensive at 150 NKR. With long tunnels which don’t allow bikes there isn’t that much option though.

Sandnessjoen is a hilly town with some real gradients. After a call at the Tourist Office and supermarket I was on my way.

There is a camping which looks good at Sandnessjoen’s airport, 10 km from town, but I went on another 10 to Offersoy. It’s a beautiful evening, and pretty quiet here. All the usual for the cheapest price yet, at 130 NKR.

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
