65 miles (104 km) – Total so far: 616 miles (992 km)
Another day of 3 ferries.
I was up a bit later after the noisy site kept me awake until almost midnight and Away at 9:40 am. I guess I can pardon most of the people at the site, as it has the best view of the sun going down, at not long after midnight, of anywhere I have seen so far. Just me being miserable wanting to go to bed at 10 pm.
A short ride of just over 1 kilometres to the ferry at Tjotta and an hour crossing to Forvik. I am having some considerable luck with ferries. I arrived for this 10 minutes before it departed, and have done that with all so far. From Forvik on the very quiet RV17 it was 17 kilometres to the next ferry at Anndalsvag, this time just a 15 minute crossing to Horn.
This is a flat part of mid-Norway and the road through to Vennesund barely climbs more than 30 meters on its ups and downs. However, I was into the wind, albeit not so strong, but certainly it made riding much harder work. This is dairy farming area and I passed the milk factory and several of their trucks passed me. Though the road got busier, the traffic on it was never a big problem. Certainly the quietest time to ride these roads is before 11 am, in these days of summer the Norwegians are late risers.
Another short crossing of 20 minutes to Holm. From the ferryman at the Holm kiosk I realised I had missed the supermarkets. I had been misinformed that there was one in Vennesund. The ferryman recommended a campsite though and said there would be some food. A top recommendation. After the only big hill of the day, a steep rise to 110 metres and the downhill there is a guy with a little shop, cafe and space for just a few tents, no hook-ups and therefore no caravans or motor homes. Just me and a lone older Dutch cyclist heading north here tonight. We had dinner together in the cafe, meatballs, potatoes and mushy peas even. It’s quiet here, and I may even get to bed before 10 pm.
Distance 64.8 miles Left at 9:40 am Arrived at 6:10 pm Time riding 5 hours 52 minutes Height gained 5711 feet

Waiting for the ferry, just 10 minutes.

Norwegians love their bus shelters. They are usually named and decorated with hanging baskets and maintained by the community. This one makes a great lunch stop – out of the south westerly wind that is in my face all day, and it’s not warm… 14C

The town of Vik, on not a busy Saturday afternoon

Boarding the last very of the day at Vennesund. I had been promised a supermarket, but there was only an expensive kiosk.

Arriving at Holm.

The campsite and cafe at Kjelleidet – great little place. Just tent camping, and good food in the cafe. Good job there was no supermarket.

Just by the ocean and the junction of the 771 off the RV17
