Day 28 – Hallein to Gmunden

67 miles (108 km) – Total so far: 1,233 miles (1,984 km)

Camping Auwirt, 3 km out of Hallein was okay for the night.
14 euros with shower included (usually it isn’t) and fast wifi.
It pretty much rained all night, but at 7 am it cleared..

Half an hour or so along the Salzburg River into the city.
I timed my arrival quite well, it was as quiet as it probably can be.
A quick spin around the centre and breakfast and onwards.

Now on to the Mozart radweg, heading east.
Today’s riding was excellent. Gentle rolling hills in picturesque Austrian countryside.

This is Drachenwand Klettersteig, or in English, via ferrata… They’re mainly historic, left from the Second War, and mainly in Italy. But these days a few are built intentionally for adventure tourism. There’s even a small one at Honsiter.
This one does look scary. It’s possible to see the bridge across the first V, and someone on it.

It’s a day of three lakes, and this is the first, Mondsee.

And just a few kilometres to the second, and the most spectacular, Attersee.
This is the little town of Unterach.

Unterach with a wedding on, and those attending in traditional dress.

Lots of ups and downs.
Plenty of golf courses I have passed also.
This one boasts some incredible views.
There’s a farmers field in the middle. He must be rubbing his hands together and waiting until the price is right.

The village of Nussdorf.
Special to me as I am reading the wonderful The Tobacconist by Robert Seethaler .
It’s set in 1937 as a 17 year old from this village goes to work in Vienna.

Bit of late lunch, and a splendid spot for it.

There’s about 30 kilometres between Seewalchen on Attersee and Gmunden on Traunsee, and plenty of up and down.
Unfortunately for me, as peaceful as the first two lakes were, Traunsee absolutely isn’t.
Motorised boats on the lake, and lots of low flying planes doing tricks…
The campground is busy of course as it’s Saturday. Lots of Germans here with very smart camper vans. Good job I’ve got the ear plugs…

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
