Day 12 – at Jezersko (snowed in..)

The skies cleared just as it got dark last night, and it was a cold night. This morning the condensation on the inside of the window had iced, usually a sign of a few degrees below. It was a spectacular morning though, with cloudless skies and all that snow lying around.

I’ve said the van copes well, and it certainly did yesterday. The diesel heater is extremely efficient, using only about 2.5 litres for 24 hours turned on. A difficulty though is that rather obviously the solar doesn’t charge when it’s covered in several centimetres of snow.

I’ve become aware this trip that solar cells work more efficiently in colder temperatures, quite markedly so, except of course if they’re deep under the white stuff. It’s also not particularly easy to clear the snow when any climbing aid is iced, so I left the job until lunchtime, and we took a hike out towards the towering Alps. There’s power for 5 or 6 sunless days stored anyway.

There was the odd day-tripper out from Ljubljana to experience what is likely to be the last snowfall of the winter, but again it was splendidly quiet.

Another afternoon of rugby, then a quick lap of the snowy pastures before dark.

Eventually, after several recent failures, a movie worth noting down, Deep Water, which is an adaptation of the wonderful Patricia Highsmith novel. Certainly worth the couple of hours.

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
