Day 52 – at Kilpisjärvi

The first snow of the season arrived overnight. Though not settling here at 550 metres asl, it is just a hundred metres or so higher.

Even though it was forecast it took me a bit by surprise, probably as it is accompanied by a strong and gusty north wind, making it feel well below zero.

It’s forecast to hang around for 4 or 5 days, so tomorrow I think we will be back to the fjord coast where it is positively balmy.

Saana peak, along with Halta the day before, and the hike out to 3 Border Cairn

will have to go onto that list of ‘Tracks I’ve Planned, Attended Yet Not Done’ list. Along with a few from Patagonia and New Zealand.

It’s frustrating, as time ticks by, but then if such a list didn’t exist, future adventure planning would be less complicated, and nobody wants that.

There’s a really good cafe here, fortunately. I had dismissed it at first. But 2.50 euros for decent coffee with a refill is a deal not worth missing, especially with the fire on and conversation with many doing the same thing; they all want to speak to Roja. It worked well between trips to the laundry room in blizzard-like conditions.

An afternoon of various admin tasks gave way to braving the weather for another dog walk, before IPA replaced coffee by the fire in the early evening. Just a pity something darker and a bit more appropriate wasn’t available.

Not many photos today..

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
