British Literature – Published 1947

I’ve read everything by Comyns now, and though this, her first, is probably the weakest of her novels, it is still well worth reading.

It’s a collection of anecdotes with a coming of age theme, many of which are humorous, but missing are those wonderful character observations and her darker side, which I really enjoy. Perhaps understandable in her first novel.

In all she wrote nine novels between this, in 1947, and [book:The House of Dolls|3381936] in 1989.
My favourite is The Vet’s Daughter, with A Touch of Mistletoe a close second.

My GoodReads score 3 / 5

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
