On the road again..

On the road again..

It’s time to get on the move again. The Coast to Coast season finishes at the Lodge at the end of this coming week, it’s been a busy September.

After breakfast service on Friday morning I’ll head down to Harwich and take the Stena Line overnight crossing to Rotterdam and then drive to Hirtshals in the north of Denmark on Saturday. That’s a lot more driving than I usually do at one time, but the ferries across the North Atlantic only run weekly, and I’m booked on the Sunday afternoon departure. That’s arrives into Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands on Tuesday morning. I’ll spend two weeks in the Faroes before continuing on to Iceland. I then have five weeks in Iceland before taking the last ferry before the winter closure back to Denmark.

My plan then is to head south, adhering to the Schengen rules, through Germany, France and Spain, and onto Morocco. Fortunately the Faroes are not in Schengen, which gives me an extra couple of weeks. These plans may well change, but at present, my idea is to be in Morocco just after new year.

I’ll update the blog every few days.

I’m expecting the weather in the Faroes and Iceland to be challenging. I have visited there twice before, both times by bicycle, and both times it was tough, magnificent, but tough. I’m a more experienced traveller now, and have the luxury of the van of course. I read that snow doesn’t usually come to Iceland until the end of November, though they have had some this weekend in Akureyri. I hope to be able to get some hiking, running, and cycling in, and plenty of swimming in the many heated outdoor pools. Visiting at this time suits me with the hiking season ending here, also that it is not possible to take dogs to either country, and that the ferry is about a third of the price than it was in June, July and August.

Some pictures from the last few weeks..

The old village of Mardale visible after such dry conditions. Though since I took this picture, about 4 weeks ago, it has done very little else except rain..

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
