La Cocina

Mexico and USA – 2025

Within the stifling confines of a Times Square restaurant, a tempestuous staff of primarily immigrant cooks and waitresses, struggle with their legal management to handle the frenzied lunch rush. Rather than focusing on the grind of food preparation the focus is on the arduous journey of immigrants striving to survive. It’s a black and white tragic comedy of people attracted, like moths to a flame, to a famous restaurant in Times Square, searching for a better life, or the American Dream.

They work under contant stress, screamed at, humiliated and even accused of crimes they didn’t commit. The central characters, a local waitress and a Mexican chef, are more disturbed than the others, wonderfully played by Raul Briones and Rooney Mara.

The camera work is greats and manages to capture the narrative in the midst of the chaos. A movie full of heart and heartbreak,

It’s a timely human drama with moments of humour to lighten the mayhem.

IMDB score 7 / 10 – my score 8 / 10

Quote of the Week

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, ‘What road do I take?’ The cat asked, ‘Where do you want to go?’ ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it really doesn’t matter, does it?’
